Open Airs

Instrumentation: string quartet

Year: 2012

Duration: 8 minutes

Program Note:
Open Airs is a short work for string quartet and was commissioned by the New Music on the Point Festival during the summer of 2012.  The title refers to two things.  The first is the genre and feel of the piece which is both jubilant and carefree.  This was inspired by the location in which New Music on the Point is held.  The festival is located in rural Vermont beneath the Green Mountains.  The second is the abundance of open strings used by all the players.  This affords a rich and sonorous quality which adds to this feeling of gaiety. Open Airs was premiered by members of the JACK quartet and New Music on the Point instrumentalists.
